Discover City Grocery

When you step into City Grocery, located at 152 Courthouse Square, Oxford, MS 38655, United States, you immediately feel the warmth and charm that only a restaurant with deep roots in its community can provide. From the moment I walked in, the combination of historic architecture and modern touches created an inviting atmosphere that made it easy to relax and settle in. The exposed brick walls and rustic wooden accents complement the bustling energy of servers who clearly know their menu inside and out.

One of the first things that caught my attention was the menu. It's not just a list of dishes; it's a carefully curated selection that showcases both local flavors and inventive takes on classic favorites. During my visit, I tried the fried green tomatoes paired with a tangy remoulade sauce, followed by the shrimp and grits, which were perfectly creamy and rich without feeling heavy. Each dish had a balance of flavors that reflected an understanding of ingredients and seasonality, a sign of the chef’s expertise. According to a 2023 study on restaurant satisfaction by the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly prioritize unique flavors and locally sourced ingredients-something City Grocery clearly excels in.

The experience is further enhanced by the knowledgeable staff. Our server shared the story behind their signature bourbon-glazed pork chop, describing how it uses locally distilled bourbon to enhance the natural sweetness of the meat. Such insights not only add context but also make diners feel more connected to the food they’re enjoying. This level of detail reflects an environment where professional experience and culinary expertise converge to create memorable meals.

Another highlight is the drink selection. City Grocery offers a mix of classic cocktails and inventive seasonal beverages, including a refreshing mint julep that was as visually appealing as it was flavorful. Pairing drinks with dishes is a subtle art, and here, the balance is striking. The restaurant also caters to different preferences, from wine enthusiasts to craft beer lovers, demonstrating thoughtful attention to customer satisfaction. In fact, a survey by Beverage Media in 2022 highlighted that diners value beverage variety as much as the food itself, which City Grocery clearly prioritizes.

I also had the chance to observe how they manage their operations during a busy weekend evening. The kitchen workflow is seamless, with clear communication and timing that ensures every dish arrives fresh and beautifully plated. This level of professionalism is what keeps reviews consistently high across platforms. Many patrons praise the combination of friendly service and exceptional food quality, which speaks volumes about the restaurant’s reputation and trustworthiness in Oxford’s culinary scene.

Beyond the food and drinks, the location at 152 Courthouse Square adds to the charm. Situated in the heart of Oxford, it provides easy access for locals and visitors alike, making it a convenient destination for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Its historic surroundings contribute to an authentic Southern dining experience that visitors often remember long after their meal. Real estate and tourism data show that restaurants situated in central, walkable areas tend to attract higher foot traffic and repeat customers, a pattern City Grocery has clearly benefited from.

The combination of excellent dishes, professional staff, and a prime location creates an experience that goes beyond a simple meal. Each visit feels carefully orchestrated to ensure diners leave satisfied, whether they’re there for a quick lunch or a leisurely evening dinner. By focusing on quality, attention to detail, and an engaging atmosphere, City Grocery has earned its reputation as a standout spot in Oxford’s dining landscape.

  • I have been to Oxford a few times for work and City Grocery is always a place I make time to go to! The staff is truly amazing and the food matches the expectation. The last week I was in Oxford I ate at City Grocery 3 of the 5 nights. I would have eaten here more but there was a Christmas parade one night and I decided to avoid the square that night. If your in Oxford and looking for a truly great experience got to City Grocery! Also if your a Ceasar Salad fan try their salad you will not be disappointed!

  • This was our second time in this restaurant and we were just as pleased with this experience as the last. The food was outstanding, with creative twists on classic dishes. The service up to par. Would eat there again in a heartbeat.

  • My wife dined here with her colleagues and thoughtfully brought home a carry-out entrée for me. Upon opening it, I noticed it was slightly over-charred for my taste. I called the restaurant to express my concern—not to complain, but simply to request a replacement that suited my preference. To my surprise and appreciation, the manager immediately offered to prepare another entrée. I arrived within twenty minutes, and not only was the replacement ready, but the manager also greeted me warmly and provided a full refund—without me ever requesting one. This gesture spoke volumes about their commitment to customer satisfaction. I wasn’t looking for compensation, just a meal I could enjoy to end my evening. Their proactive and gracious response turned a minor disappointment into a genuinely positive experience. I would recommend this location for fine dining and great customer service.

  • Recently dined at City Grocery on yet another very busy Friday evening in Oxford – this time, graduation weekend, and it was indeed very crowded and busy on the Square. Despite the bustling crowds of the Square, we were pleasantly surprised by the seamless experience. Although our reservation was for 6:45, we arrived over an hour early and were promptly seated by a gracious hostess who expertly managed the bustling atmosphere. Securing a table at City Grocery can be a challenge, so her efficiency was truly commendable. We opted to forgo starters due to the limited selection, instead diving straight into Caesar salads with a twist, featuring kalamata olives and hard-boiled egg. While not your traditional Caesar, they were a delightful departure from the norm. Entrees included Wasabi-crusted salmon, Char Siu pork belly, pan-roasted duck breast, and a grilled flatiron steak. Each dish showcased impeccable flavors, with highlights being the perfectly cooked duck, salmon, and rare flat iron steak. Though the pork belly leaned slightly towards being overdone, the accompanying scallion rice grits and sesame infusion added a delightful Korean barbecue flair. I don’t know if this is what the chef intended, but the flavor was outstanding. For dessert, we enjoyed crème brulee, chocolate-filled profiteroles, chess pie reminiscent of Mississippi Mud Pie, and strawberry mousse. Throughout our dining experience, the service was satisfactory, with attentive waitstaff ensuring our needs were met in a timely manner. Dining at City Grocery was memorable, despite the bustling atmosphere. While there were minor flaws in some dishes, the overall quality of food and service makes it a worthwhile dining destination in Oxford. I would certainly return and recommend it to others.

  • Great Southern fare done in unique ways. Maybe a touch of salt on the pasta raviolo, but all good. I will say the bourbon drinks were a bit of a disappointing experience. The Old Fashioned tasted off and the tons of icecubes and not one block was a miss. My Sazerac was good, but it felt like it needed more stirring. Something to consider is upping the bourbon drink experience. Maybe some egg white drinks? Cool ice to put in. Service was wonderful. It was a tad loud. Older buildings do that. Great ambiance.

  • The reviewer below should change her name to Kookie Kook. The shrimp and grits was phenomenal. Definitely not too salty as Kook incorrectly claimed. The crab rangoon dip was also a hit. Perfect proportion and taste. As for the ambiance, it was also amazing, as I was able to easily converse with my wife who enjoyed her City Salad and butternut squash soup. Ryder was on point with his service. Great experience! Don’t listen to Kook!

  • We had a group that met there. The waitresses were very nice and helpful. Most of the food was delicious. I ordered the special that day that was the pork chop sandwich. It was tough and hard to chew. I will order one of the other choices next time.
